Netscape 4.X SMTP Setup Instructions We need to setup your e-mail to use something called SMTP authentication. You don't need to worry about this terminology. We just need to make a few quick changes. You don't have to be connected to the Internet to do this but it wouldn't hurt either. The basic Netscape 4.x window is pictured below. Begin by clicking the "Edit" menu at the top and choosing the "Preferences" option from the drop-down list.
The preferences window always opens to the navigator category on the left as pictured below. We need to go into the "Mail & Newsgroup" settings so click the + sign to the left of "Mail & Newgroups" so that more options drop-down below it. Once you've got those extra options, you will see one called "Mail Servers" and you need to click on that option to highlight it. When "Mail Servers" is selected, you will see different options in the gray area to the right as pictured below. You should already have most of the correct information in there. We simply need to make sure that you have the first part of your e-mail address in the box for "Outgoing mail server user name" for the SMTP authentication to work. (Tip: Don't worry about the technical terms. It's your e-mail name that counts.) For example, if your e-mail account is santa@northpole.com then you would just put santa into that box (where it says "sample" in the picture. Click the "OK" button and you are ready to connect to the Internet to send & receive e-mails. You're all finished with the new settings.
