What network protocols should / shouldn't I have installed?
By using these directions, you can check to see
if you have the proper network configuration.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are using a computer that is on a LAN or has any type of connection to
another computer, these directions won't apply.
ALSO - If your configuration is working - don't fix it!
1. Double click My Computer
2. Double click Control Panel
3. Double click Network
4. This screen will show you what network components are installed.
5. Ideally, the only thing you require is "Dial-Up Adapter," and
"TCP/IP." If you want Windows to save
your password for logging in, "Client for Microsoft Networks" should be
installed. If Windows doesn't give you the option to
save your password, and you would like to install "Client for Microsoft
Networks," click here.
(If you have America Online, you will have AOL
Adapter, Dial-Up Adapter, TCP/IP --> AOL Adapter, TCP/IP -->Dial-Up Adapter.)
6. If you have "Client for Netware Networks,
IPX/SPX Compatible, or NET/BEUI" installed, you can safely remove by first
highlighting them, then clicking "Remove."
7. We need to ensure your TCP/IP settings are correct. First, double click on TCP/IP
(or TCP/IP --> Dial-Up Adapter if you have America Online.)
8. Click on DNS Configuration.
9. You should have "Disable DNS" checked. If it is enabled, you can safely click
on "Disable DNS" without having any problems. The DNS information is only needed
in the Dial-Up networking portion of the configuration.
10. Click OK, then OK again.
11. If you made any changes, Windows will prompt you to reboot. If that is the case, click
YES and allow Windows to reboot.
