Microsoft Outlook 2000 Services Variation Quick Links: New Account Setup | Configuring & Troubleshooting Accounts | Options | Related Links: Changing 'Services' to 'Accounts' | Sometimes Outlook contains what is known as Services in the Tools menu instead of Accounts. All versions of Outlook have both 'Services' and 'Accounts'; it depends on how Outlook is configured. Below are screenshots showing how to set up an account in Outlook Services. Note: if you want to change 'Services' to 'Accounts', click here. Click Tools. Select Services from the menu.
The Services window opens. If there were an account, it would be listed in the white box below. Since there is not, select Add.
From the list, highlight Internet E-mail. Select OK.
The Properties window opens to the General tab. (Oh good! It's familiar again.) Mail Account = give the mail account a name. It doesn't matter what you call it; however, if you have more than one account (Work, Personal, Mom, Dad, Junior, etc.), you'll want to be descriptive. I gave this one mail.ispname.com. Name = your name or nickname. E-mail address = your full e-mail address.
Select the Servers tab. Incoming mail (POP 3) = mail.ispname.com (ispname = the name of your ISP). Outgoing mail (SMTP) = mail.ispname.com (ispname = the name of your ISP). Account name = your username (everything before the @ispname.com of you e-mail address). Password = your password. If you don't remember it, contact your ISP. Important: some ISPs require SMTP authentication to send e-mail. If your ISP requires it and SMTP authentication is not enabled, you will not be able to send e-mail. If your ISP doesn't require it and it is checked, it won't affect anything. To enable SMTP authentication, place a check next to My server requires authentication. Click the Settings button.
Select Log on using. Enter your username (everything before the @ispname.com of you e-mail address) and password in the appropriate fields. Click OK.
Select the Connection tab. Ensure that Connect using my phone line selected. In the field under Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection, select your Internet connection.
Select the Advanced tab. Towards the bottom is Delivery. You can choose to leave a copy of your e-mail on the server. Important: If you leave a copy on the server, it's a good idea to delete them periodically. Otherwise the e-mail will build up and you won't have any room to receive more.
Note: as shown below, you'll need to Exit and Log Off on the File menu for the settings to take affect. Click OK.
The e-mail account is now in Outlook Services. To modify the account, highlight it and select Properties. Otherwise click OK. Important: remember to Exit and Log Off on the File menu for the new settings to take affect.
